Martin Scorsese Teases Upcoming Jesus Movie

After its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the director toured Italy and Rome, announced that he was inspired to make a film about Jesus

Martin Scorsese is not slowing down.

After presenting finishers of the Blooming Moon at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20, the legendary 80-year-old director took a long trip through Italy and briefly met with Pope Francis during a stop at the Vatican. Soon after, he revealed that he was now inspired to make a movie about Jesus.

According to Variety, Scorsese announced the news at a conference he attended in Rome titled “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination.”

“I answered the Pope’s call to artists the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a script for a movie about Jesus,” Scorsese said, adding, “and I’m about to start doing it.”

The project would not be the first time that Scorsese delves into the issues of Catholicism. In 1988, he directed The Last Temptation of Christ and Silence of 2016 focused on Jesuit Christians.

Antonio Spadaro, editor-in-chief of the Jesuit publication that organized the event, thanked Scorsese for his visit in a detailed Twitter message on Saturday.

While in Cannes for his latest project starring longtime collaborators Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, Scorsese received a nine-minute standing ovation after the three-hour premiere, Scorsese addressed the crowd during the moment, thanking his collaborators and telling the audience before him, through the exit, that the “We filmed this a few years ago in Oklahoma. It took a little while to arrive, but Apple has done very well for us.”

He added: “There was a lot of grass. I’m a New Yorker. I was very surprised. It was an amazing experience. We were living in this world.”

The film is an adaptation of the book by David Grann from 2017 Flower Moon finishers: The Osage executes and the birth of the FBI.

Set in the 1920s in Oklahoma, the film tells the story of the serial execute of members of the Osage Nation, who became rich thanks to the oil discovered on their lands. The crimes were later dubbed the Reign of Terror.

DiCaprio plays Ernest, the nephew of a powerful local rancher, played by De Niro, and Lily Gladstone plays Ernest’s wife, Mollie. The cast also includes Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, William Belleau, Louis Cancelmi, Tatanka Means, Michael Abbott Jr., Pat Healy, Scott Shepherd, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.
